“ Tuticorns”- Unicorns — Social Emotional Learning
Before we start, I want to clarify that “tuticorns” is not unicorns spelled wrong, but it is what I learned from one of my 2 years old students. She came in one day in our class and saw a unicorn on the computer screen, she ran towards the table, she stopped in front of the screen and exclaimed: tuticorns! We all felt instantly in love with this word!
And we all learned that day that there it is a difference between unicorns and tuticorns.
Coming to an end of our 8 weeks long, Summer Junior STEAM Camps, I was thinking what can we create together that would be a unique and long lasting memory for our campers?
So I came up with the idea to create: Uniocrns-Tuticorns!
Little did I know what will happen next.
You might wonder what has to STEAM do in the Unicorn/Tuticorn making?
Well here is what my students discovered!
They must be right as they all are Unicorn/Tuticorn experts:
Science in Unicorn? — It is scientifically proven that Unicorns have a magical ingredient that makes people smile and happy.
The Technology element in an Unicorn is that you really have to make research on the internet to find out the latest news, trends about unicorns
The Engineering element is the amazing process that you design the pattern, choose the materials and make important decisions about size and structure!
The Arts is the part where you create, craft color …
Maths part is: how many Unicorns/Tuticorns do you have to create so all people in your community, city, state, country, continent and all around the world can have one!
Why do we decided to use Unicorn-Tuticorn?
So we made an Emotional Experiment!
We have asked ourselves: how does it feel when you say the word Unicorn?
Try it along with us: close your eyes for a moment and say loud: unicorn
What do you feel? You feel warm, cozy , safe? Yes we felt the same
After this close your eyes and say loud: tuticorns!
When you say “tuticorns” you feel not only safe and relaxed but also makes you smile!
So we decided: TUTICORNS will be the vehicle that will make this world a better, safer and more connected world!
We are planning to take the “Tuticorn Project” to the next level, by building a community of “tuticorns” that spread love, healing and support!
So, yes this is how we “steamed” Unicorns to Tuticorns and this all lead us to a project that make the world a better place!
